Are All LASER Shops Equal?

If your a buyer for LASER cut products you may have wondered about this yourself. Why do different shops charge different amounts for the same part? What is my true cost?

As the LASER cutting process has become more mainstream there have been a lot of upstart LASER companies offering their cutting services throughout the last few years. Being in business for over 36 years David Engineering is not a fly by night start-up manufacturing job shop. Here are a few of the things I have seen from customers that have come to David Engineering from other shops as well as comments from customers that have left DEM for a short period of time to try out the "cheaper" service some of our competitors offer.

When comparing Stainless Steel quotes
  • Are they including material?
  • Are they using Nitrogen to cut vs Oxygen? Cutting with Oxygen is much cheaper and is fine for mild steels but with Stainless it leaves a brown edge which is not only ugly, it has to be sanded off in order to add welding or powder coating operations.
Are all slugs removed? Some shops do not remove slugs; how can you maintain quality if you can't even determine if the hole size was correct when they shipped the parts to you.

Another thing to consider is how the company operates and if they can meet your needs as you grow. Are they a full service shop? Do they have engineering capability? Do they offer bending, forming, tooling, welding, powdercoating, and complete packaging solutions?

And finally, the most important thing we get complimented on all the time; Do they have Rev control? At David Engineering we adhere to strict rev control and document control to make sure you get the exact part you ordered each and EVERY TIME.
